Methods of Consumption: Exploring the Diverse Ways to Experience Cannabis

The effects of consuming cannabis are inherently individual, influenced by a myriad of personal factors such as genetics, physical health, mental health history, age, personality traits, and sex. Your body’s response is a complex interplay of these factors, the products chosen, the cannabinoid content in the product, and the method of consumption.

 

 

1. Inhalation

Inhalation involves either combustion (burning) or vaporization of ground dried cannabis flowers. Combustion may include rolling the dried flower in paper and igniting it with a flame or using a pipe or water pipe (commonly known as a “bong”). Vaporization, on the other hand, employs a vaporizer or vape—an electronic device that heats cannabis to an optimal temperature, releasing its active compounds in a vapour for inhalation.

This method swiftly delivers active compounds to the bloodstream via the lungs, resulting in a rapid onset of effects. For new inhalers, starting with one inhalation is advisable, as the strength of effects correlates with the quantity inhaled. It’s essential to note that inhaling cannabis carries potential risks to lung health and should be avoided around children.

 

2. Ingestion

Ingestion involves consuming cannabis products, including capsules, oils, soft chews, chocolates, baked goods, beverages, and sauces. Active compounds enter the bloodstream through the digestive system, leading to a delayed onset of effects compared to inhalation. This slower process may inadvertently lead to consuming more cannabis than intended. Effects from ingestion also tend to last longer.

For those new to ingesting cannabis, starting with a minimal amount and waiting at least an hour to assess the body’s response is prudent.

 

3. Topical Application

Primarily used for medical purposes, topical cannabis products are rarely psychoactive. However, it is advisable to apply a small amount to the skin initially, as research on this method remains limited.

 

4. Other Consumption Methods

Several unconventional methods exist, although OCS.ca currently does not offer items in these categories.

  • Juicing: Fresh cannabis flowers can be juiced to ingest cannabinoids, vitamins, and minerals. As the cannabis isn’t heated during the juicing process, it doesn’t produce intoxicating effects.

  • Nasal Spray: Similar to sinus medication, this method delivers a standardized dose of THC or CBD directly to the bloodstream.

  • Suppositories: Primarily used for specific medical conditions, more research is needed to understand their efficacy.

 

Exploring various consumption methods allows individuals to tailor their cannabis experience to their preferences and needs. It’s crucial to stay informed about the potential effects, start with conservative doses, and be aware of the unique considerations associated with each consumption method.
